Applications can now communicate with accessories
Apps for iPhone and iPod touch can now communicate with accessories via the 3.5mm audio jack.
Enhance your accessory by developing an iPhone app to extend its functionality, or create entirely new integrated solutions that combine an iPhone app with dedicated hardware. For example, you can display a fully interactive Multi-Touch equalizer for your speaker system. Create an inventory app for your barcode reader. Or, build an app that logs and tracks the readings from an attached heart-rate monitor. The potential solutions are limitless.
H4I logos
The H4I logos mean that an electronic accessory has been designed to connect specifically to the iPod and iPhone 3.5mm audio jack and has been certified by Progical Solutions LLC to meet the highest standards.
Technical Documentation and Hardware Components
Developers receive technical specifications describing the H4I library, the SDK used to interact with iPod and iPhone accessories. Developers also gain access to the hardware connectors and components that are required to manufacture iPod and iPhone accessories.
Technical Support and Compatibility
Developers have access to Developer Technical Support and Compatibility Labs to assist in product development and testing.
Details and Pricing Information
The H4I program has evolved from the initial work done by Alex Winston. Although this work was groundbreaking at the time there wasn't an easy way to support developers who might adopt this technology. However with the release of the iPhone SDK 3.0 Apple also released the External Accessory framework. With this framework as the model Progical Solutions LLC has implemented these interfaces as a standardized means to integrate apps with external accessories through the 3.5mm audio jack. At speeds up to 19.2K baud, serial data can be programmatically sent and received by the iPhone and iPod.
Acceptance into the H4I program is guaranteed for all serious external accessory efforts and can be licensed for development for a nominal fee. Commercial licensing is flexible and reasonable on any budget.

Video demonstration of integration between the H4I framework and the OneTouch UltraMini glucose meter. When the meter is connected the glucose meter software version, serial number and record count are loaded. The records are then loaded when the refresh button is pressed. Records are deleted or cleared when pressing the discard icon. A reading is taken and then loaded into the iPhone.
